Our Story

Jewellery inspired by the colours of Australia.

Mahkato started as a love for jewellery - in particular, an adoration for chunky, bold, native American silver. Mahkato is now an expression and appreciation of my own country - Australia, with an encapsulation of the Dakota Indian word Mahkato, meaning Greenish Blue Earth. I love to travel, and I’m in awe of Australia’s rugged and vast beauty - the greens, the reds, the blues.

Mahkato jewellery is handmade and designed by me, Kate, on the Sunshine Coast QLD. Jewellery for me has always been an expression of self - with no words needed. After graduating university and taking roles in various office jobs, I realised something was missing - my ability to be creative, something that had always run through my veins. Jewellery making started as a side hustle, but I decided to take a plunge, and Mahkato really started coming to life in early 2022. Mahkato always specialised in a range of Australian Stones - but is now focussed mostly on Solid Australian Boulder Opals. To me, opals are mother natures finest creations, and the broad colour range mesmerises me.

I create timeless, carefully considered, lasting pieces - fast fashion has no place in my heart. I source Australian stones, that have been cut in Australia, because it’s this last that I hold very close to my heart. I use top quality materials to ensure your jewels are cherished for a lifetime, and passed down from generation to generation. At Mahkato, we take all of these things into consideration, and do our best to bring you the most meaningful, and high quality jewellery possible.

It is creativity that keeps me sane and I hope that you can find solace in your jewellery. Custom orders are welcome, and we can embark on the adventure together to create the perfect piece for you that makes you feel alive.

Thanks for your support, please reach out if you have any questions.
